Let's travel back in time to learn about the Olmecs, one of the oldest and most fascinating civilizations in Mesoamerica!

Who Were the Olmecs?

The Olmecs lived in what is now Mexico, way back between 1400 and 400 BCE. That's even before the Maya and the Aztecs! They were super skilled artists, farmers, and traders. They built amazing cities and left behind incredible clues about how they lived. The name "Olmec" means "rubber people" in the Aztec language, because they lived in a region where rubber trees grew!

Giant Stone Heads!

The Olmecs are most famous for their massive stone heads. Imagine carving a head bigger than a car out of a giant rock! These heads are portraits of Olmec rulers. We don't know exactly how they moved these giant stones, which weighed many tons, but scientists think they used rafts and rollers.

What Did They Do?

The Olmecs were clever people! They were some of the first in Mesoamerica to develop a writing system and a calendar. They grew crops like corn, beans, and squash. They traded with other groups, exchanging goods like pottery and jade. They also played a special ball game, which was important to their religion. We even think they might have invented chocolate!

Isn't it amazing to learn about people who lived so long ago? The Olmecs teach us that even without modern tools, people can create incredible things! Keep exploring the past, and you'll discover even more amazing stories!
